Italy + France tour update 2006

A group of 8 members organised a pre season tour of the South of France and Italy over the weekend of 21st - 23rd April.

Flying into Nice on the Friday morning, they travelled to Menton just inside the French border.  They played a team from the Menton club. The club had a large number of clay courts and a very nicely appointed club house.  Membership cost 2500 Euros per annum!

On the Saturday we travelled to a small village called Ospidaletti about 30 miles inside  Italy.  They had 3 courts perched above the Mediterranean. Their hospitality was tremendous - flags flying, gifts to take away, and food prepared by Luigi, our contact man and a local chef.  Again, clay courts in excellent condition.

The sun shone throughout with temperatures about 25 centigrade.  Perfect.

On April 21st, with the help of Easyjet, the men of Kings III team will be setting of on a three day tour to the South of France and Italy, where they will play matches against Menton Tennis Club and Tennis Club Ospledaletti. Looking at the views it is hard to imagine why they would want to leave Bristol really......

Anyway, good luck to the team -John Hickey, John.Scott, Gordon, Bannister, Nick.Sturman, Mike Sansom, Ross Kieran and Tony Barker -we hope to hear more news of their tour very soon.

2005

Summary of 2005 at Kings Lawn Tennis Club
Adult Tennis
:

2005 has seen a huge rise of the number of adult members who are using the club facilities on a more regular basis. Thank you for all your support throughout the year. We again ran a number of very well supported events notably the doubles events during spring and summer which were a great success. These were again surpassed by the Christmas mixed generation event where 56 players entered with 48 being members of the club. 'The Defenders' (Sheila Quinn and Louise Webb) won the title for a second consecutive year. Maybe next year we should call them 'The Reaffenders' !!! A big thank you to all those who participated.

Monday Night Club Coaching is going well with good numbers every week. We have continued Thursday Night coaching for beginners due to the increased demand for lessons. My thanks go out to the members who have supported the nights throughout the year; it has been much appreciated on the cold and wet nights!

Tuesday Nights have continued to grow throughout the year with more members taking part. Jim Mottershead, one of our new coaches, has turned out for Club play throughout the winter nights to guarantee members have a game. The 'open nights' held on the first Tuesday of the months have also been popular with new and prospective members having the chance to meet new people and play some tennis. The Bar is open and is proving more and more popular so come and keep Rob company after you played!! . Thank you to Chris Askew who has tirelessly helped to promote these nights.

Junior Tennis..

We have had a shake up in the latter part of 2005 with the coaching staff. We have said a fond farewell to Andy Putley and Charlie Thompson and thank them for all their hard work since joining Kings. We now say G'Day to Ryan Fowler who has come over from Australia to work in the sunnier climes of England !! Also hi to Jim Mottershead who has come from Next Generation in Bristol. More on our junior successes under coaching.

2004

November 2004 -November saw the first Brian Golding Memorial Challenge match between teams from Kings and Central. The match is to be an annual event in memory of Brian Golding who died of cancer -Brian was a member at both clubs, and his parents kindly donated the shield pictured opposite.

The event is intended to bring together players at club level s. The opening match was won by Central, who hosted the first match -thank you for the magnificent spread of food. We look forward to a return match in 2005.

A donation has been made to cancer charities by both clubs.
